Novo abacaxi resiste mais a fungo

O IAC fantástico, lançado pelo IAC-Apta, suporta mais o ataque da[br]fusariose do que o havaí e o pérola

O Instituto Agrônômico (IAC-Apta) lançou em janeiro uma variedade de abacaxi. Batizado com o nome IAC fantástico, a cultivar apresenta diversas vantagens em relação às variedades mais utilizadas para o plantio comercial, como a smooth cayenne (também conhecida como havaí ou bauru) e a pérola. A maior resistência à fusariose, doença causada por um fungo e que é considerada o maior problema para a cultura de abacaxis, é a primeira delas. “Como é uma doença muito difícil de ser tratada, mesmo com o uso de defensivos, pois se dissemina muito rapidamente, ela acaba fazendo com que a cultura do abacaxi seja nômade, ou seja, quando o produtor tem sua plantação afetada a única solução é migrar o plantio para outra área”, explica o pesquisador responsável pelo Centro de Recursos Genéticos e Vegetais do IAC e um dos membros da equipe que desenvolveu a nova cultivar, Walter José Siqueira.

A baixa acidez e o gosto doce de sua polpa é outra característica marcante do IAC fantástico, que o coloca em vantagem em relação à variedade mais plantada no País, o abacaxi pérola, que possui sabor pouco doce. “Mesmo verde, o IAC fantástico é doce. Além disso, a diferença de doçura entre o ápice e a base do fruto (da extremidade ao centro) é muito pequena, o que garante melhor aproveitamento no consumo in natura, diz o pesquisador voluntário Ademar Spironello. Por último, o pesquisador, que coordenou o estudo para o desenvolvimento da nova cultivar, iniciado em 1991, destaca a ausência de espinhos nas folhas, que facilita o seu manuseio, e a cor amarelada intensa da polpa (diferentemente do pérola, que tem a polpa branca), que a torna mais atrativa, como outras vantagens do novo fruto.

Spironello explica que a obtenção do novo abacaxi se deu em três etapas. A primeira foi o cruzamento entre a variedade tapiracanga (não cultivada para fins comerciais) e a variedade comercial smooth cayenne. Na segunda fase foram retiradas sementes das plantas híbridas originadas do cruzamento. Por último foram selecionadas plantas que reuniam as características desejadas.

A partir daí a reprodução da planta tem sido feita em laboratório por meio da cultura de tecidos (clonagem). “As mudas criadas em laboratório estão sendo usadas para a produção de mudas naturais, que irão enfim frutificar a nova cultivar”, explica Spironello.

Siqueira conta que o próximo passo é incentivar os produtores a substituir suas áreas plantadas com pérola e smooth cayenne pelo IAC fantástico. De acordo com ele, essa substituição já foi aplicada em uma cooperativa de produtores de Guaraçaí (SP), maior polo de produção de abacaxis no Estado de São Paulo, e em Ipeúna (SP), onde um grande produtor está fazendo cultivo comercial da fruta. “Com base nos estudos que fizemos podemos afirmar que se trata de um cultivar que vai bem nas regiões norte, central e oeste do Estado. No entanto, pode ser plantado em regiões tradicionais de cultivo, como o Estado do Pará e em Minas Gerais”, diz.
